Snoop Dogg Biopic In The Works With Death Row Pictures Teaming Up With Universal Pictures
Snoop Dogg’s biopic is in the works.
The yet-to-be-named project will mark the inaugural project for the newly formed Death Row Pictures.
Together with Universal Pictures, the story of 51-year-old Calvin “Snoop Dogg” Broadus is seeing the light of day.
Already the Doggfather has some names attached to the project.
Set to direct the project is Allen Hughes, and Robert Cole is the writer.
Previously, Hughes worked on The Defiant Ones doc, which highlights the industry rise of Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine.
Additionally, he is currently heading the five-part doc on Tupac Shakur and his mother, Afeni titled Dear Mama.
Along with Snoop, Hughes and Sara Ramaker will produce the film.
Speaking on the film, Snoop had this to say –
“I waited a long time to put this project together because I wanted to choose the right director, the perfect writer, and the greatest movie company I could partner with that could understand the legacy that I’m trying to portray on screen, and the memory I’m trying to leave behind.”
“It was the perfect marriage. It was holy matrimony, not holy macaroni.”
Universal Pictures previously did the biopic for NWA, titled Straight Outta Compton.
We all know how successful that is.
Of course, Snoop will also be pulling music from his Death Row catalog for the project.
Hughes speaks highly of his latest subject in this project, saying –
“Snoop Dogg is one of the most internationally beloved figures in hip-hop. There’s just something about his energy that brings people of all walks of life together.”
“Snoop Dogg, not just the artist, but the man and his brand, has transcended generations with his connection and appeal to audiences. His story is so authentic and utterly inspiring, and to have the opportunity to tell his story allows me to go back to the hood 30 years after Menace II Society, and say more now than I could then.”
Donna Langley, the chairman at Universal Pictures made this statement about Snoop and his legacy –
“Snoop Dogg’s life and legacy make him one of the most exciting and influential icons in popular culture. We met with Snoop shortly after he acquired Death Row Records and had the opportunity to hear his story in his own words. We are humbled to be able to create the lasting document of this singular artist.”
Though no date is set for this upcoming film, fans can’t wait to see this project come to fruition.
