Sanaa Lathan Directs ‘On The Come Up’

Sanaa Lathan is set to mark her first directiorial movie, On The Come Up. Plus, as a co-star, she is working with Little Yachty and Method Man.

On The Come Up Marks The Directorial Debut For Sanaa Lathan

Sanaa Lathan released the trailer for On The Come Up.

And as the 50-year-old actress‘ first time directing, she is serving double duty as a co-star as well.

The first Paramount trailer was unleashed during the BET Awards show.

While the movie is an adaptation of Angie Thomas’s NY Times bestselling novel of the same name, it is a coming-of-age film dubbed “a love letter to hip hop.”

Fans are eager to see if the film lives up to the story in the novel.

During the 30-second teaser, we are introduced to 16-year-old Bri as she pursues her aspirations in battle rap.

But she is also battling controversy, as she tries to live up to her famous father.

According to Paramount+, here is the full synopsis –

“Bri (Jamila C. Gray), a young Black girl, attempts to take the battle rap scene by storm in order to do right by the legacy of her father—a rapper whose career was cut short by gang violence—and to help her family climb out of poverty. But when her first hit song goes viral for all the wrong reasons, she finds herself torn between the authenticity that got her this far and the false gangsta role that the industry wants to impose upon her. Based on the New York Times #1 best-selling novel by Angie Thomas (who also penned ‘The Hate U Give’), ‘On The Come Up’ is punctuated by the comedic talents of Mike Epps, hip hop heroes like Method Man and Lil Yachty, and the lyrical prowess of Rapsody.”
