Snoop Dogg Faces Backlash. As you might know, Calvin Broadus a.k.a Snoop Dogg has his own wine brand.
Typically, it’s found in the wine aisle at your local grocery stores. And likely liquor stores. The 19 crimes wine remains fairly affordable.
Recently, the rapper/actors brand received negative reviews following a 19 Crimes ad. A Kroger in Georgia featured a life size cutout of Snoop near the storefront.
Importantly, the promotion includes bottles of bubbly from Tha Doggfather’s label. As well as, Black Girl Magic wine in the produce section
However, the advertisements stand in close proximity to a board with several Black History Month quotes. Of course, this insinuates that the two correlate.
Rather or not the store did this intentionally—shoppers were highly offended. Apparently, the bulletin board read, “Dream Like Martin” and “Say it loud, ‘I’m Black and I’m proud,” much to certain patrons’ dismay.
Thus, they consider the ad a slap in the face.
“I just felt that it was offensive,” Johnnie Jones, a former president of the local NAACP told the WSB-TV. “They really promoting alcohol. Proud of drinking wine? “No. We’re proud of the Tuskegee Airmen whose shoulders I stand on,” he said, nodding the former commercial and military pilot.”
Frankly, Jones would’ve loved to see other Black icons. Such as Atlanta’s first Black Mayor, Maynard Jackson, or Ed Johnson, the first Black Mayor of Fayetteville.
“We need to be thirsty for knowledge.”
Elsewhere, there’s other consumers who weren’t offended in the least.
Unsurprisingly, the backlash resulted in the ad getting pulled down. And a statement from the corporate offices.
“Kroger is committed to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in all we do. Our intentions are never meant to be offensive.”
All in all, we’ll never know if the advertisement’s meant to be distasteful or not. We still love and support Uncle Snoop.
