GQ’s New Masculinity Issue With Pharrell. Pop culture considers Pharrell Williams to be an innovator. And, his image on Gentlemen’ Quarterly aka GQ has confirmed this very idea. However, this is not the first time Pharrell has been on the cover of this legendary men’s magazine.
Pharrell pushes the masculinity conversation forward
Is there an agenda to redefine what masculinity means to today’s society? Has the fashion industry taken on the responsibility to change our mindset about masculinity? In this thought provoking cover of GQ it is clear the fashion industry is not taking a back seat to this controversial topic. Certainly, choosing Pharrell was brilliant. Especially, since Pharrell has been known as an innovator. Pharrell came on the music scene 20 – years- ago wearing slimmer jeans, more fitted skate tees, and mesh trucker hats, as reported by GQ.
Not to mention Pharrell was the frontman of N.E.R.D. Pharrell dared to be different. In fact, it was not popular to look preppy or nerdy back then. Many of those in Hip Hop were wearing baggy jeans, and really lose fit clothing. Pharrell broke the mode of the Hip Hop stereotypical dress code.
In his latest endeavor Pharrell takes on the issue of masculinity. Pharrell was a pioneer in hip hop with his musical genius. So, appearing on the cover of GQ with the yellow cape like attire with black trim is very different, for a lack of better words. I am not sure what to make of the attire Pharrell is wearing. But it really does make a statement. In this disposition of time redefining masculinity is quite a task. Especially, because some think that masculinity is taking on a more feminine design.
Different ideas over the years have emerged on sexual identity, masculinity, feminism and other culture norms are constantly changing. Therefore, how can one music artist change the ideas of masculinity that have been etched in our minds. Maybe, just maybe GQ is on to something.
