The school offers at-risk students outstanding academic support, mentorship, and other resources. The Akron, Ohio, school made another bold move: it announced that it would provide permanent housing to some of its most vulnerable families. The I Promise School has partnered with East Akron Neighborhood Development Corp to provide affordable housing.
According to Afrotech, a 50-unit building on Maple Street includes two-three and four-bedroom apartments.
This new partnership with James is state-of-the-art housing with Wi-Fi, community, and fitness rooms.
In addition, the housing units are tailored to assist people with mobility issues.
James endeavors to “positively affect the lives of children and young adults through education and co-curricular educational initiatives.”
James is keeping his promise to help those who have been at a disadvantage, as stated by Black Enterprise.
The Vice Chair of East ANDC spoke at a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the project.
Dan DeVille told the audience that “Young people who have a quality place to live are better students and become better citizens in our community,”
Families who qualify for this housing can apply online.
So far, seventeen families have been approved to live in the housing complex.
I Promise School will also provide support services for the families and students.
Those services include medical, mental, educational, career advancement, and financial literacy.
And the ribbon has officially been cut. Time for tours!
