Rapper Eminem Takes A Knee At Super Bowl Halftime

Marshall “Eminem” Mathers took a knee during his halftime performance. It was a clear sign of solidarity with Colin Kaepernick’s message. The entire halftime show was historic.

Did The NFL Know Eminem Was Going To “Take A Knee”?

According to USA Today, the NFL was aware of what Eminem was going to “Take A Knee.” However, some of us watched in awe. The veteran rapper would show his solidarity by kneeling after his performance. Yet there he was kneeling before millions of people in the stands.

Eminem sent a clear message that the fight for equal justice is not over. And, that he stands with Colin Kaepernick who also took a knee during an NFL game. Both Eminem and Colin demonstrated the power of suggestion in kneeling in protest of inequality against Blacks.

Of course, any performance must be approved. Therefore, Eminem kneeling was part of the show. In fact, NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy shared this,

“We watched all elements of the show during multiple rehearsals this week and were aware that Eminem was going to do that,” McCarthy said. “A player or coach could have taken a knee and there would have been no repercussions, so there was no reason to tell an artist she or he could not do so.”

Colin Kaepernick Took A Stand Against Inequality

After McCarthy’s statement, it was clear the NFL wants to make changes. Not long ago, Kaepernick was ousted out of the NFL for the same thing Eminem did at Superbowl halftime.

It was during the 2016 NFL season, Kaepernick drew international attention when he dropped to one knew. The former San Fransico 49er was kneeling in protest of the oppression of Black people in America.

Eventually, Kaepernick would win a monumental court case against the league. Afterward, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell apologized by saying,

“I wish we had listened earlier, Kaep, to what you were kneeling about and what you were trying to bring attention to.”

So far, Eminem has not made any public statement about his actions. Which is not unusual for Eminem. Because he normally lets his music do the talking.

What are your thoughts about the Superbowl halftime show? Do you think Eminem and fellow veteran rappers represented the culture well?
