Will Smith Banned For The Slap Heard Around The World
Will Smith finally receives his punishment for slapping Chris Rock on a live broadcast of the Academy Awards.
When he decided to walk up on that stage after Rock told an inconsiderate joke about his wife, he took all the air out of the room.
But not only that, he initiated a domino effect across his career, in which numerous projects are shelved.
Fans and audiences everywhere were shocked and wondering, “What just happened?”
Not only did he apologize 3 times, but days after the event, he formally resigned from the Academy, saying he would –
“…accept any further consequences the Board deems appropriate”
So What Did The Academy Have To Say?
Now, two weeks after what happened at the Oscars, The Academy’s Board Of Governors met virtually to issue repercussions.
This is the result of that investigation that was ultimately determined in a letter –
“…for a period of 10 years from April 8, 2022, Mr. Smith shall not be permitted to attend any Academy events or programs, in person or virtually, including but not limited to the Academy Awards.” – Academy President David Rubin and CEO Dawn Hudson
Additionally, the letter read –
“During our telecast, we did not adequately address the situation in the room. For this, we are sorry.”
“This was an opportunity for us to set an example for our guests, viewers and our Academy family around the world, and we fell short — unprepared for the unprecedented.”
Also, the Academy addressed Chris Rock and hosts Amy Schumer, Wanda Sykes, and Regina Hall in their statement.
“We want to express our deep gratitude to Mr. Rock for maintaining his composure under extraordinary circumstances.”
“We also want to thank our hosts, nominees, presenters and winners for their poise and grace during our telecast.”
“This action we are taking today in response to Will Smith’s behavior is a step toward a larger goal of protecting the safety of our performers and guests, and restoring trust in the Academy.”
“We also hope this can begin a time of healing and restoration for all involved and impacted.”
Other than saying he was still processing what happened to him, Rock has not issued a formal statement.
Nor has he opted, as of yet, to press charges.
Even though you may be a fan of Will Smith, you cannot deny that was the stupidest thing he could have ever done.
And now he waits, as the dominoes continue to fall!
