The Roots Picnic Part One

The Roots Picnic Part One. After a two-year hiatus, the annual Roots Picnic is back. Needless to say, some heavy hitters hit the stage this year for the return.

Roots Picnic Is Back

The Roots Picnic Part One. Philadelphia supergroup The Roots are the brains behind the Roots Picnic which began in 2008.

Sadly, the annual festival was forced to come to a  halt in 2020 due to the COVID pandemic.

Well, the highly anticipated event officially returned with groundbreaking numbers.

Nearly 60,000 fans gathered at Philly’s Mann Center at Fairmount Park to enjoy the festivities.

That’s a major jump from the 2,000 people who attended the inaugural Roots Picnic in 2008.

Of course, the festival boasts an impactful lineup of performers. Not to mention, the R&B Queen herself, Mary J. Blige was a headliner.

So, DJ Diamond Kuts and DJ D-Nice held it down on the ones and twos.

Of course, The Roots performed a quick set before introducing Mary J. Blige. From there, she moved the crowd in true MJB fashion.

The songstress sang some of her top hits like Be Happy and brought the vibes with several instrumentals. Also, MJB hit her infamous two-step while the crow yelled the beloved “Go Mary,” chant.

Furthermore, the biggest boss Rick Ross hit the stage and performed a string of classics including BMF.

The festivities would be remiss not to bring out Phillys’ own, Jazmine Sullivan. She wowed the crowd with fellow Philly artist Tierra Whack.

Additionally, Benny the Butcher hit the stage. As well as G-Herbo and Babyface Ray.

This years’ festival will be live-streamed on YouTube. So, even those who couldn’t attend the picnic can chime in.

Stay tuned for a rundown of day two.
