Some Charges Dropped For Rapper YNW Melly. Florida rapper YNW Melly, born Jamell Demons, has been in the spotlight for more than just his music in recent years. The up-and-coming artist faced murder charges in connection with the deaths of two of his friends, Christopher Thomas Jr. (YNW Juvy) and Anthony Williams (YNW Sakchaser). However, in a surprising turn of events, some of the charges against YNW Melly have been dropped.
YNW Melly Scores Legal Victory
In a significant development for Florida rapper YNW Melly, he gets a big win in his case. State prosecutors in Broward County officially dropped several felony charges on January 20, 2026.
The dismissal comes just as the rapper was set to begin a separate trial. These charges were related to allegations of witness tampering and gang activity.
Summary Of Dropped Charges
The Broward County State Attorney’s Office moved to dismiss four specific counts against the 25-year-old artist:
-
Witness Tampering: Allegations that he attempted to prevent a witness from testifying during his 2023 murder trial.
-
Directing Criminal Gang Activities: Charges linked to his alleged leadership role in a criminal organization.
-
Criminal Solicitation to Commit Murder.
-
Conspiracy to Tamper with a Witness on a capital felony.
Melly’s defense team, led by attorney Drew Findling, welcomed the decision. He stated that it was “immediately apparent” that no crimes had occurred in connection with these charges.
Moreover, it was determined that YNW Melly’s ex-girlfriend would be a hostile witness. Therefore, making the tampering case difficult.
The Road Ahead: Double Murder Retrial
While the dismissal of the tampering case is a major win for YNW Melly, he remains incarcerated. Primarily, because he awaits his double murder retrial.
Key Trial Facts Details
Initial Trial Result: Mistrial (Hung Jury) in July 2023
Current Status: Incarcerated without bond – Retrial Date- Scheduled for January 2027
Potential Penalty: Life in prison or the death penalty
Why the Delay?
The retrial has been postponed multiple times due to ongoing disputes over admissible evidence. Which included a YouTube documentary and various digital records.
Prosecutors continue to maintain that YNW Melly and co-defendant Cortlen “YNW Bortlen” Henry staged the 2018 shooting. But tried to say it was a drive-by shooting.
We have learned that YNW Bortlen Henry recently accepted a plea deal in 2025, receiving a 10-year prison sentence for accessory and tampering.
