What was intended to be a historic and celebratory hometown tribute to the late hip-hop icon Earl “DMX” Simmons quickly dissolved into public family drama.
On Friday, June 12, city officials and loved ones gathered together. It was to celebrate in Yonkers, New York, the official unveiling of “Earl ‘DMX’ Simmons Way” at the corner of School Street and Brook Street. However, the momentous occasion was overshadowed. During the street naming, DMX’s eldest son, Xavier Simmons, took the mic to publicly blast the rapper’s fiancée, Desiree Lindstrom.
Tensions Boil Over on Stage
According to eyewitnesses and online footage, the ceremony initially proceeded smoothly. City leaders, including Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano and Councilwoman Tasha Diaz—who spearheaded the initiative—joined members of the Ruff Ryders crew to honor the rapper’s global legacy and deep roots in the Yonkers community.
Friction began to surface after Desiree Lindstrom, who shares a young son, Exodus, with DMX and serves as the co-administrator of his estate alongside his daughter Sasha, addressed the crowd.
It appeared the event was scheduled to close without any remarks from DMX’s first wife, Tashera Simmons, or their children. However, a last-minute adjustment allowed Xavier Simmons to take the microphone. He did not hold back.
“There is absolutely no way that you will close this ceremony and we will not hear from his original entire family,” Xavier declared, immediately inviting his mother and siblings to join him on stage.
Xavier went on to praise his mother, Tashera, for her hard work behind the scenes, noting that she was instrumental in gathering local signatures to make the street naming a reality.
Then, he turned his focus directly to Lindstrom.
“Desiree Lindstrom. You have behaved dishonorably,” Xavier said bluntly, accusing her of attempting to exclude DMX’s mother and his other children from key legacy events.
Xavier’s microphone was abruptly cut off mid-sentence, preventing him from elaborating further, but the damage was already done. Reports indicate that the underlying tension dramatically shifted the event’s mood. While Lindstrom was originally scheduled to pull the string to unveil the new street sign, Mayor Spano ultimately stepped in to do it. Lindstrom reportedly departed shortly after the confrontation.
Tashera Simmons Responds: ‘There is No X Without Tashera’
Following the event, DMX’s ex-wife Tashera Simmons took to social media to firmly back her son’s public call-out. In a video statement, she blasted those she felt tried to erase her family’s contribution to the late rapper’s life.
“Did my son expose these devils? They’ve been exposed,” Tashera said in her post. “Come on. Y’all know DMX. Y’all know Tashera. We built the DMX legacy together. There is no X without Tashera. The fact that they came to my hometown and did not want us to be recognized… I’mma let y’all sit with that one.”
Tashera and DMX were childhood friends who married in 1999 and shared four children—Xavier, Tacoma, Sean, and Praise—before later divorcing.
A Fragile Peace Broken
The public blowup marks a sharp pivot from the fragile unity the family displayed immediately following DMX’s passing in 2021. During his memorial service, Tashera and Desiree shared a viral, emotional embrace on stage, which fans praised as a beautiful display of maturity within a blended family.
Unfortunately, as reports from TheGrio and Okayplayer point out, estate management and legacy control have seemingly fractured those relationships.
While the drama remains a focal point online, the physical sign at School and Brook Street will permanently stand to honor the music, struggle, and undeniable impact of Yonkers’ favorite son.
