Hip Hop Artist Pay Their Respects To Bobby Caldwell.

Common Pays Tribute To Bobby Caldwell. Bobby Caldwell was behind the hit “What You Won’t Do For Love.”  His hit song was released in 1978. It reached No.9 on Billboard’s Hot 100.

Not to mention, “What You Won’t Do For Love” has been covered by Boys II Men, Natalie Cole, and Michael Bolton.

Also, the late Tupac Shakur sampled his famous tunes “Do For Love”, and “Heaven Ain’t Hard To Find.” , as reported by CBS.

Furthermore, rapper Common sampled “Open Your Eyes” on his 2000 album.

In addition, Common was nominated for a Grammy for another Caldwell song “The Light.” So, Common thought it necessary to salute Caldwell.

It’s amazing how Caldwell songwriting  and singing impacted the hip hop community. Which is another reason to celebrate Caldwell.

Music artists who worked with Caldwell celebrate his contribution to music.

In general, Caldwell’s music has been sampled extensively across hip hop, as reported by Hip Hop DX.

Even Gospel music artists Amy Grant and Peter Cetera recorded “Next Time I Fall,” another Caldwell creation.

Even I was surprised that, Vanessa Williams and the legendary Notorious B.I.G also sampled Caldwell’s songs.

Amazing isn’t it. To top it off, most people did not know Caldwell was the singer behind “What You Won’t Do For Love.”

I must admit, until recently I did not know either. However, Caldwell’s song is heavily in my music list rotation.

Bobby Caldwell’s Earlier Career

Caldwell grew up in a musical family. His parents were host of a variety show “Suppertime.” He started singing while a teen.

Important to note, Caldwell admitted he was greatly influence by the Beatles, and Frank Sinatra.

To say nothing of, Nat King Cole and Tony Bennett’s styles helped shaped his musicality.

Let me share this with you,

As a singer, he has a successful career with numerous solo releases, which have earned accolades far and wide. His songwriting skills have earned hits not only for himself, but also for well-known artists like Chicago, Boz Scaggs, Peter Cetera and Amy Grant, Neil Diamond and Al Jarreau.”

Having said this, Caldwell has undoubtedly changed the landscape of music forever. Rest In Power!
