Salt-N-Pepa Sue Universal Music Group For Their Masters. The iconic hip-hop duo Salt-N-Pepa, consisting of Cheryl James and Sandra Denton, has taken legal action against Universal Music Group for allegedly withholding unpaid royalties. The Grammy Award-winning artists, known for hit songs like “Push It” and “Shoop,” have filed a lawsuit claiming that Universal has failed to compensate them for their contributions to the music industry. The legal battle between Salt-N-Pepa and Universal has sparked significant interest within the music community.

These iconic rappers have decided to take on the music industry giant Universal Music Group in a bold move. Although this has been an ongoing battle, we are just finding out.

According to The Guardian, the female rap duo claims UMG has not returned some of their music. The lawsuit claims that the group’s first two albums, “1986’s 1986’sHot, Cool & Vicious” and “Salt With a Deadly Weapon belong to UMG.”

However, Salt-N-Pepa refutes the claims that the albums above are theirs. As we all know, Salt-N-Pepa won critical acclaim with their music in the early 80s and 90s.

Some songs like ”hoop ” and ”hatta Man ” were fan favorites. Also, the rap duo won a Grammy in 2021. Recently, they were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Other songs by Salt-N-Pepa reached the top of the charts on several occasions. In addition, Salt-N-Pepa was the first female rap group to win a Grammy for “One of Your Business.”

Having said this, the female rappers have allegedly tried repeatedly to reclaim their masters. While UMG does not own all of Salt-N-Pepa’s later hits, those are the ones we mentioned above.

However, UMG claims,

In 2022, the pair filed termination notices, aiming to end UMG’s ownership of their early recordings. But in their lawsuit, they claim that UMG has said those termination notices are not valid because Salt-N-Pepa’s songs were “works made for hire” and so the duo cannot reclaim the rights.”

Bet further states that the lawsuit was filed on May 18, seeking complete ownership of their masters. It appears that the songs in question were sold to a third party.

Universal Music Group is taking the stand that Salt-N-Pepa sold their royalties. This appears to be a tricky situation, with no end in sight.

Famed Hip-Hop Duo Sues For Unpaid Royalties. Salt-N-Pepa’s lawsuit against Universal is causing adverse reactions within the hip-hop community. It’s not the first time UMG has been involved in music royalty lawsuits.

If I remember correctly, UMG is allegedly feuding with other hip-hop artists, like Limp Bizkit and Drake. Limp Bizkit has a $200 million lawsuit against UMG for allegedly withholding royalties.

As stated by Variety, Drake’s lawsuit is for alleged defamation of character. The Canadian rapper claims UMG boosted Kendrick Lamar’s” All ot Like Us.”

Therefore, Kendrick’s song was provided to more streaming services. As you can see, UMG is notorious for these sorts of lawsuits.Salt-N-Pepa’s claims have not mentioned any money so far. So, it remains to be seen how much compensation Salt-N-Pepa could receive if their claims are proven true.

For now, we will keep you posted on the outcome. Rapper Drake and the band Limp Bizkit’s case is still pending.
