A Detroit WNBA team was more than just a pipe dream for Eminem. He saw it as a way to partner with Detroit Pistons owner Tom Gore.
This new partnership will bring professional Women’s basketball to Detroit by 2029. According to Black Enterprise, news of this joint venture was disclosed in March 2025.
Additionally, retired NBA players Chris Webber and Grant Hill have joined the venture. Detroit had a WNBA team from 1998 to 2009; however, the Shocks moved to Tulsa.
After winning three championships, the team left Tulsa; the “Shocks,” now known as the “Dallas Wings,” are in Arlington.
Other prominent investors are interested in bringing a WNBA team to Detroit. As the mayor of Detroit said,
“Our passion for our teams and players is unmatched, our commitment to our communities remains unwavering, and our vision for women’s sports is crystal clear.”
As we all know, the WNBA is establishing teams throughout the US. Even Philadelphia mentioned that their city is planning to have a WNBA team.
Detroit Expansion: Eminem’s Dream Realized
After years of planning and negotiations, Eminem’s dream of bringing a WNBA team to Detroit finally became a reality. Eminem now has the go-ahead to bring the WNBA team to Detroit, as stated by Hip Hop DX.
This is excellent news, fulfilling the rapper’s vision and bringing excitement to the city. It will be the return of a WNBA team to the city of Detroit.
As we mentioned earlier, the Shocks were once a WNBA team in Detroit. But the team moved to Tulsa and now resides in Texas. Because Detroit played a pivotal role in the development of professional women’s basketball, this is truly epic.
Not only will the WNBA team bring women’s sports to the forefront, but it will also inspire a new generation of athletes. It will add more resources to the community, as stated by Tom Gore.
He added,
“We have brought together an impressive array of investors who reflect the strength and diversity of Detroit. I’m excited about what we can accomplish together to advance women’s professional sports and inspire a new generation of fans. I’m grateful to our exceptional investor group, Commissioner Engelbert, and the WNBA for their trust in our vision and commitment to the people of Detroit.”
Fans and sports enthusiasts are eagerly awaiting the team’s arrival. Eminem’s journey from being a rapper to becoming a team owner was a testament to his dedication and passion for his city.
