LSU’s Angel Reese Controversial Antics. There is an age-old issue with race relations in the US. When we should be celebrating a victory, we are not. Once again, the focus is on race.
This is a huge problem. Here’s why, In the first place, Reese allegedly taunted Kim Mulkey. And so many people bashed Reese for doing so.
But this kind of banter often happens in sports. Why did Reese’s “trash talk” become so controversial?
Would it have been an issue if it was the other way around?
I think not. Let me tell you why two things: how women are not celebrated correctly, and there are still issues with color.
Apparently, there is still a stigma against women expressing themselves.
For some reason, any expression of feelings that are not favorable gets shut down.
In other words, Reese was ostracized for celebrating LSU’s win. Of course, only racists and squares were offended, as stated by Buzzfeed.
Furthermore, wasn’t that the same move WWE’s John Cena used? So, why are some people bent out of shape?
Not to mention, all Reese said was, “You can’t see me,” right? If that is the case, what gives?
Unfortunately, Reese received backlash. In fact, some called her actions “classless.”
Equally important to note is that Caitlin Clark (Iowa) used the same gestures in two previous games.
As Buzzfeed clearly pointed out,
“Reese is Black, Clark is white. Those who venerated Clark while denigrating Reese perpetuated an age-old trope in sports: White players who show emotion tend to be praised for how much they care about the game, while Black players who show emotion tend to get criticized for lacking discipline and disrespecting opponents.”
I completely agree. As a matter of fact, Clark got the attention of First Lady Jill Biden for her antics. Biden even suggested that both Iowa and LSU come to the White House.
That, alone, sparked even more controversy for Reese. In a tweet, Reese allegedly laughed at the idea.
Why would Biden invite both teams? Is that the “new normal? “ I digress. Needless to say, once again, it proves my theory.
This sends a clear message, as stated by coach Kim Mulkey,
“Reese is Black, Clark is white. Mulkey says, why should the public attack Reese but celebrate Clark? After all, both basketball players’ antics were the same.
LSU Won The Championship Game (102-85 win)
In a report by New York Post, Reese came away with 16 points and three rebounds. Afterward, Reese and Clark’s social media following skyrocketed.
The young girl from Baltimore, Maryland, is enjoying her success. Despite the controversy swirling around her actions. Rightfully so.
Reese has managed to put women’s college basketball front and center. No longer will we view women’s basketball the same.
