Prakazrel Samuel Michel rose to fame in the 1990s as a member of The Fugees alongside Wyclef Jean and Lauryn Hill. Despite his successful music career, Pras found himself embroiled in controversy involving illegal funds.

He was first indicted for applying funds found to be stolen. As the investigation unfolded, Pras was accused of working with disgraced Malaysian financier Low Taek.

Low Taek, better known as Jho Low, allegedly transferred $21.6 million illegally to Pras’s accounts. According to Entertainment Weekly, Jho Low then allegedly directed Pras to distribute those funds.

The funds were allegedly given to the campaigns of former President Obama and Donald Trump.

What Led To the Sentencing?

The illegal campaign contributions made by Pras were part of a larger scheme to circumvent federal election laws. As we mentioned, Pras used straw donors to channel funds from a foreign national into the Obama campaign.

At the same time. Pras allegedly funneled large sums of money into President Trump’s reelection campaign. This elaborate scheme was uncovered during a federal investigation.

To top it off, Pras and Jho allegedly tried to influence President Trump and the Justice Department to drop charges. However, that backfired, and now Pras Michel is going to spend considerable time behind bars.

In fact, Pras was charged with illegally funneling millions of dollars, as The New York Post reported. As we all know, Pras was a founding member of the hip hop group “The Fugees.”

A U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly handed down the hefty sentence on Thursday, November 20, 2025.

In addition to the long sentence, Pras will have to serve 3 years of probation. Lastly, Pras was ordered to forfeit $64 million for his crimes. In the meantime, Pras was ordered to turn himself in sometime in January 2026.
