Best known for his work in the Fugees alongside Lauryn Hill and Wyclef Jean, he finds himself in serious trouble. Prakazrel Michel is being accused of making illegal contributions to political campaigns.
These alleged violations have caused a conviction in court. According to Vibe, Pras was convicted on multiple conspiracy charges.
A federal judge, Colleen Lollar-Kotelly, ruled that Pras failed to register as an agent of China. And, he was accused of witness tampering.
He allegedly had a role in helping Malaysian financier Jho Low gain political access to US presidents. Former presidents Barack Obama and Donald Trump’s campaigns were reportedly tampered with.
In other words, money from Jho Low was allegedly given to Barack’s 2012 campaign. Also, Jho reportedly tried to persuade the Trump administration to drop its investigation.
Apparently, Jho was involved in a 1MDB embezzlement scandal. Prosecutors claim Pras accepted $20 million from Jho Low to arrange a photo with former President Barack Obama.
Then he allegedly used straw donors to funnel campaign contributions.
Faces $64 Million Penalty For Campaign Finance Violations
As we mentioned earlier, Pras allegedly funneled money through straw donors. The $64 million penalty resulted from illegal campaign contributions Pras reportedly made.
This kind of conspiracy violates campaign finance laws. And, there is a hefty fine for these violations. So we see that Pras must cough up the $64 million assessment issued by Judge Kotelly.
To top it off, Pras may spend some considerable time behind bars. However, Pras’s sentencing has been postponed because he is having surgery for colon cancer in August 2025.
Sentencing for the rapper could come down as soon as December 2025. In the meantime, Pras’s attorneys are saying the penalty is too steep. Therefore, they are fighting for a lesser amount for Pras to pay.
It remains to be seen how this legal saga will unfold and what impact it will have on Pras Michel’s career moving forward.
