This has been quite an ordeal for Atlantic City’s mayor, Marty Smalls. According to ABC News, the jury in the mayor’s trial reached a verdict on December 18, 2025.

In a courtroom in Mays Landing, New Jersey, the mayor found out his fate. In this case, it was great news for him and his family. He was found not guilty of second-degree endangering the welfare of a child.

In addition, the mayor was found not guilty of terroristic threats and tampering with witnesses. To refresh your memory, Mayor Marty Smalls was accused of physically and emotionally abusing his teen daughter.

Prosecutors claimed he once beat her with a broom until she lost consciousness. At the time of the alleged child abuse, his daughter was between 15 and 16 years old.

As the mayor took the stand in his own defense, the jurors heard a complete account of the incident. He described himself as a loving father.

How unfortunate that this “personal family matter” has become public. Throughout, the mayor has maintained he was innocent.

Legal counsel in his case argued that the mayor’s daughter’s injuries occurred accidentally. Also, his attorney claimed the mayor was being attacked by his daughter.

Therefore, he allegedly tried to defend himself as the teen brandished a butter knife.

Outside the courthouse, Mayor Marty Small called the verdict a “win for everyone” and expressed a desire to rebuild his relationship with his daughter. This acquittal comes just weeks after Small was re-elected to a new four-year term as Mayor. However, the legal situation for the Small family is not entirely over:

  • La’Quetta Small: The Mayor’s wife and school superintendent faces similar abuse charges and is scheduled for a separate trial in January 2026.

  • Constance Days-Chapman: The suspended high school principal also faces charges related to failing to report the abuse allegations.

But for the mayor, this nightmare is almost over. He will now have to support his wife during her upcoming trial. As he stated, he wants to rebuild his relationship with his daughter. Needless to say, this family has a long road to recovery.

Ever since allegations of child abuse surfaced, the mayor’s career was in jeopardy. Above all else, the mayor can get things back on track.
