Jay-Z Fights to Block $119,000 Debt Discharge in Paternity Judgment
Hip-hop mogul Jay-Z is continuing his legal pursuit against Lillie Coley. Lillie is the godmother and legal guardian of Rymir Satterthwaite. He has claimed for over a decade that the rap icon is his biological father.
The latest development centers on a six-figure judgment awarded tha Jay-Z. Jay wants Lillie to pay to cover his attorney’s fees after years of litigation that was dismissed.
Key Highlights of the Legal Conflict
-
The $119,000 Award: In January 2026, U.S. District Judge Sherilyn Peace Garnett ruled that Jay-Z was entitled to recover $119,235.45 in legal fees and costs from Coley under California’s anti-SLAPP statute after dismissing her paternity-related lawsuit with prejudice.
-
Bankruptcy Dispute: Coley filed for bankruptcy to have her debts discharged. In response, Jay-Z’s legal team filed motions in bankruptcy court to prevent the $119,000 judgment from being wiped out.
-
Allegations of Fraud & Harassment: According to court documents reported by Complex and The Times of India, Jay-Z argues the debt arose from intentional misrepresentations and a “decades-long harassment campaign,” making it non-dischargeable under bankruptcy law.
Decades-Long Paternity Allegations
The dispute stems from claims made by Rymir Satterthwaite and his late mother. Wanda Satterthwaite alleged that Jay-Z had a relationship with her in the 1990s. Following Wanda’s passing, Coley took over as legal guardian and continued pushing legal actions.
Jay-Z has consistently denied the claims. Every lawsuit filed by Satterthwaite and Coley across multiple states has been dismissed. No judge has been willing to pursue the case. Many claims have been dismissed by judges for lack of jurisdiction or procedural deficiencies.
As detailed in coverage by Black Enterprise and Power 105.1, courts have repeatedly barred further unfounded suits.
Concluding that the claims lacked factual and legal standing.
Current Status: Coley has asked the court to dismiss Jay-Z’s latest bankruptcy petition. The bankruptcy court has yet to issue a final ruling on whether the $119,000 debt will be preserved or discharged.
