Oprah Winfrey is finding herself in the hot seat following comments she made at the 2026 Cannes Lions Festival. While reflecting on memorable moments from her daytime talk show career. Winfrey recounted a 2009 appearance by the legendary Whitney Houston. She claimed that the singer had suffered a drug relapse. And Whitney fell off the stage during the taping.
Winfrey stated that she had to “beg” the studio audience to keep the incident under wraps. At the same time, Oprah asked them to refrain from sharing photos to protect Houston. Apparently, Oprah did not want Whitney to suffer from public embarrassment. However, bringing up the painful, decades-old memory has ignited a fierce wave of criticism from Whitney Houston’s estate and prominent figures in the Black community. According to TMZ, Pat Houston (Whitney’s sister-in-law) was adamant about refuting Oprah’s claims.
Rickey Smiley Blasts Oprah and Gayle King as “Out of Touch”
Comedian and syndicated radio host Rickey Smiley released an emotional, scathing response via a livestream, taking direct aim at Winfrey and her longtime friend Gayle King. Smiley questioned the necessity and timing of Winfrey’s remarks, asking why she would choose to resurface such deeply personal and painful history more than a decade after Houston’s passing in 2012.
Smiley didn’t hold back, asserting that Winfrey and King have become fundamentally disconnected from their core audience:
“Nobody asked for that information. Let our artists rest in peace… [Oprah and Gayle King] are out of touch with the Black community.”
Smiley argued that Whitney Houston is viewed as “Black royalty” whose artistic contributions, faith-filled music, and generational talent should be celebrated, rather than overshadowed by unconstructive gossip about her past vulnerabilities. He pointed out a pattern of what he considers insensitive reporting, drawing comparisons to Gayle King’s controversial interview questions immediately following the death of Kobe Bryant.
