Man Pleads Guilty To The Murder Of Jam Master J Murder

Man Pleads Guilty To The Murder Of Jam Master J Murder. Fans of the iconic rap group Run-DMC were devastated when they heard that Jason “Jam Master Jay” Mizell was shot to death in his studio. For many, it was a tragic end to the career of one of the most talented DJs in hip-hop.

Jay Bryant Pleads Guilty in Jam Master Jay Murder Case

In a significant breakthrough for one of hip-hop’s most enduring cold cases, Jay Bryant (52) pleaded guilty.
This all took place on Monday, April 27, 2026. He pleaded guilty to a federal murder charge for his role in the 2002 killing of Jam Master Jay (Jason Mizell).

The legendary Run-DMC DJ was shot and killed in his Queens recording studio on October 30, 2002. For over two decades, the investigation faced numerous hurdles. However, federal prosecutors finally secured convictions and guilty pleas.

The Admission of Guilt

Appearing in a Brooklyn federal court, Bryant admitted to acting as an accomplice. He admitted it was he who opened a locked fire-escape door to let the gunmen into the studio.

  • The Motive: Prosecutors established that the murder was the result of a drug dispute. Mizell had reportedly been involved in a cocaine deal worth nearly $200,000 and had cut his associates out of the transaction.

  • Bryant’s Statement: “I knew a gun was going to be used to shoot Jason Mizell,” Bryant told the court. “I knew that what I was doing was wrong and a crime.”

  • Potential Sentence: Bryant faces a mandatory minimum of 15 years and a maximum of 20 years in federal prison.

Status of Co-Defendants

The case against the other men involved has seen complex legal turns:

  • Ronald Washington: A childhood friend of Mizell, Washington was found guilty by a jury in 2024 for his role in the execution-style killing.

  • Karl Jordan Jr.: Mizell’s godson was also initially convicted in 2024. However, a federal judge later overturned Jordan’s conviction, citing insufficient evidence to maintain the jury’s verdict.

Why It Matters

For 24 years, the “who and why” behind Jam Master Jay’s death remained a painful mystery for the hip-hop community. While Bryant was a late addition to the indictment. His involvement was discovered in 2023 after DNA on a hat linked him to the scene. His guilty plea provides a definitive legal narrative for the events of that night.

“The prosecutors in our Office and our law enforcement partners never gave up. No matter how long it took, in the pursuit of justice for the victim and the victim’s family.” — U.S. Attorney Joseph Nocella.

At this time, neither Run nor DMC has made any public comments about the conviction. But this does close the chapter on the long-awaited justice for the beloved New York Dee Jay, Jam Master Jay.
