Drake’s Defamation Lawsuit Against UMG Dismissed

Drake’s Defamation Lawsuit Against UMG Dismissed. Canadian rapper Drake recently made headlines after filing a defamation lawsuit against Universal Music Group (UMG), one of the biggest record labels in the world. The lawsuit alleged that UMG defamed him by releasing Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us.” In other words, Drake claims that Kendrick’s mentioned fans should resort to vigilante justice because he was a pedophilia.

In the lawsuit, Drake claimed that UMG promoting Kendrick’s music over his was damaging to his reputation. Furthermore, Darke alleges Kendrick’s song could have led to possible violence against him.

This sort of lawsuit was inherently problematic. It was hard for Drake to prove Kendrick’s lyrics were directed towards him. Be that as it may, Drake filed the lawsuit against UMG anyway.

According to TMZ, Drake claims his previous diss track, “Taylor Made Freestyle,” was a callback from Kendrick. Having said this, the court disagreed with Drake.

Here is what a spokesperson from UMG said,

As you can imagine, Drake is not in agreement with the federal judge’s ruling. Therefore, he is seeking another way to pursue the matter.

Court Rules In Favor of Universal Music Group

The court’s decision to dismiss Drake’s lawsuit against UMG came after much scrutiny. There was no evidence to prove Kendrick’s lyrics on “Just Like Us” would affect fans’ mindset.

UMG argued that the First Amendment protected the content of Kendrick’s song. Listeners would understand the song’s lyrics as opinion and “hyperbolic vituperations” within the context of rap battles, not literal accusations.

While Drake may have lost this legal battle against UMG, he continues to dominate rap music. And, his loyal fan base has not been affected by this dispute.

However, from now on, this kind of lawsuit might have merit. That is, if other artists continue to pursue lawsuits such as these.

As we all know, laws can be altered. So, who knows if Drake will take his argument to the Supreme Court? Stay Tuned!!!
