BET Halts Hip-Hop And Soul Train Awards
BET Halts Hip-Hop And Soul Train Awards. In a surprising turn of events, BET has announced that it will be putting its annual Hip-Hop and Soul Train Awards on hold this year. The decision comes as a surprise for those fans who look forward to watching the events every year. Both shows have celebrated many African American artists whose talent is immeasurable.
BET Puts Hip-Hop and Soul Train Awards on Hold
BET Halts Hip-Hop And Soul Train Awards.
Soul Train and the Hip-Hop Awards are two of the most highly anticipated music events of the year. Each event attracts top artists and industry professionals from around the world.
CEO Scott Mills claims other shows are being created, according to Vibe. According to Scott, different shows, such as the NAACP Image Awards, will continue.
In addition, the Stellar Awards will be televised as planned. Also, Scott claims they are working on shows that will reimagine both popular shows (Hip-Hop and Soul Train).
However, it could be the end of an era for promoting Hip-Hop shows. Or at least, this is what people are assuming. As we all know, this political climate is changing the landscape of America.
And, it appears, BET is the target of, allegedly, Making America Great. Then again, it could be due to streaming platforms. It does not help that the Hip-Hop awards have a checkered past.
What Impact Does Suspending the Soul Train And Hip-Hop Awards Mean?
Suspension of both the Soul Train and Hip-Hop awards will impact viewership, according to Billboard. In other words, those fans who watch the awards each year may opt for different TV channels.
And that could be problematic for the BET Network. We can’t help but wonder if BET will disappear. It has been 45 years since BET has impacted the African American experience.
These events serve as a platform to honor the best in the industry. Not to mention, there is a chance for fans to see their favorite artists perform live on stage.
There was once little representation of African American culture, until BET was created. In 1980, when Robert L. Johnson launched BET, it was revolutionary in terms of all black programming.
From its inception, BET has televised some monumental events. Here is what I mean: BET was the first television network dedicated to African American audiences.
Is This The End Of Black Programming?
The Black Entertainment Network has attracted significant advertising revenue and viewership. So, suspending Soul Train and the Hip-Hop award show will have a considerable impact.
And, it provided a space for Black voices and experiences to be seen and heard. Not to mention, BET has been a significant platform for showcasing Black talent in music and film.
Furthermore, Soul Train and The Hip-Hop award shows were the most watched on cable. Likewise, BET’s programming often reflected and elevated Black culture, including its fashion and social trends.
Therefore, suspending both award shows may decrease the influence of Black life and culture. Lastly, suspending both Soul Train and Hip-Hop award shows changes the landscape.
Will the careers of hip-hop artists be elevated and celebrated on other networks? More importantly, it is essential to point out that BET contributed to the rise of Black media ownership and entrepreneurship.
Should we be concerned about this significant change to BET? How will BET Network fill the gap of suspending these shows? Is it possible that BET will find innovative ways to honor our Hip-Hop community?
In the meantime, I suppose fans will continue to support BET for now.
