The mastermind behind the iconic band Parliament-Funkadelic has been prominent in the music industry for decades. However, his latest legal battle has put his reputation on the line.
Variety reports that George is suing Westbound Records and his former business partner in a lawsuit filed in a Florida District Court.
Nine Records, Southfield Music, and Eastbound Records are also included in the $100 m lawsuit. George claims they have all unlawfully continued to profit from his music.
NME reports that George Clinton has hired the famous attorney Ben Crump. Both men were seen outside the iconic Apollo Theatre for a press conference.
During the press conference, George discussed that he is trying to reclaim his music catalog. He shared,
“These songs we’re talking about is my history,” said Clinton. “I have to fight for them, I have to make sure that I did not do all of this my whole life and have my family here, not get what’s due to them, what they inherit. We don’t have a chance to pass down 40 acres and mules to our families. We do not have the copyrights for the songs. So I’m here along with Ben and partners to make sure that Armen does not get what we worked so hard for.”
In case you don’t remember, George Clinton, aka P-Funk, dominated the 1970s and early 1980s with his eclectic sound. His group’s shows included the famous P-Funk Mothership.
If you enjoyed going to a Parliament-Funkadelic show, then you know it was epic. Some of the group’s costumes were outlandish. Fans were amazed by the theatrics and futuristic sounds.
Songs such as “Flash Light” (1978) and “Aqua Boogie” (1978) were fan favorites. However, the tune “One Nation Under A Grove” (1978) mainly resonated with fans.
However, one of my favorites was “Aqua Boogie (A Psychoalphadiscobetacbioaquadoloop) .” That particular song would be blaring on radios and dance floors.
Musicians Bootsy Collins and Bernie Worrell blended their sound with George. For so many of us, Parliament-Funkadelic was our preferred music choice.
Bootsy Collins’s sound mixed with the band’s made their sound unique. Bootsy Collins became one of the most talented guitarists in music.
After the group disbanded, each continued to enjoy successful careers. In the 90s, George Clinton worked with prominent rappers Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, and LL Cool J.
Ultimately, George Clinton will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, as Britannica states.
$100 Million Lawsuit Filed Against Whom?
George claims Armen Boladian fraudulently obtained 90% of his music catalog copyrights. This has been an ongoing battle for George throughout the years.
He has continued to fight for his musical catalog. Early on, George fought over the group’s name and music. Now, George finds himself in a battle for his music once again.
How often have we seen music artists fighting for their catalogs? Seeing Black artists having the same issues with music companies is disheartening. Countless lawsuits have been filed against record companies.
Sometimes, the artists win, but for the most part, they do not. In this case, George is determined to get his music catalog back—and rightfully so. Why should record labels get all the copyrights for artists’ hard work?
After all, the music artist pours their heart and soul into their songs. Yet, the record label gets the benefits. When will this sort of thing end?
Sure, we are familiar with the 360 Slave Deal. Many music artists, particularly rappers, signed the top-heavy deal, which, as you all know, leaves record companies wealthy.
At the same time, the artist does the work without much reward. If George is successful with this lawsuit, it may open the door for others. That is, another artist could sue the record companies and win.
It will at least spotlight the unfair practices within the music industry. We will be watching to see if George can regain his rights.
