Ol’ Dirty Bastard’s Widow Files Lawsuit Against Wu-Tang Clan
Wu-Tang Clan was one of the hottest rap groups in history. This rap group helped to solidify hard-core East Coast rap in the ’90s. The nine-man rap group from Staten Island, NY forever changed the face of hip-hop.
Icelene Claims Wu-Tang Clan Owes Her Royalties
Russell”Ol’Dirty Bastard” Jones was a founding member of the group. However, it’s been 20 years since he died. But it appears his widow is allegedly asking for $1 million in royalties. According to TMZ via AfroTech, court documents say the ODB should be receiving at least 50 percent of net royalties for his image and likeness.
Also, ODB’s widow claims the group has not followed through with promises made to her. But RZA, another founding member of Wu-Tang Clan is allegedly disputing Jones claims.
The lawsuit was filed in the New York Supreme Court. In the lawsuit, ODB, Ghost face Killer, GZA, and Raekwon were to receive equal amounts of 50 percent of royalties. Royalties are from the Wu-Tang Clan music catalog.
Here is some of what allegedly happened,
“Despite its repeated efforts and requests, the estate has been unable to obtain payments and accountancy from the defendant under the recording agreement for the sale of Wu-Tang Clan Recording and ODB recordings since at least 2011,” read the suit.”
ODB’s estate did, however, receive payments in 2019 and 2020 from Warner – Tamerlane Publishing Corp. There was a check in the amount of $130,000 that came in July 2021. Jones shared that the amount given is barely what her husband is owed.
Robert”RZA” Diggs gave this response to Jones lawsuit
“We have been very supportive in providing economically to the family through the estate and to his wife and children on record and off record,” said RZA. “ODB’s potential share of those records are minimal, are dismal, but nevertheless after those products are recouped his prorated portion belongs to him.”
There does not seem to be any resolution for the case. Therefore, Jones is waiting for a court to decide.
Coincidentally, Diggs has filed a few lawsuits which are similar. He claims that Wu-Tang Clan’s likeness and images are being used without their permission.
