Drake Dropped A Lawsuit Against UMG Then Pursues Another

Drake Dropped A Lawsuit Against UMG Then Pursues Another. Canadian rapper Drake has found himself amid a legal battle with Universal Music Group, one of the leading music companies in the industry. The dispute has been making headlines. While Drake did not pursue the lawsuit against Spotify and UMG for allegedly boosting Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us,” he is now suing for alleged defamation. We do realize these allegations against UMG are a bit converting. Nevertheless, Drake is pressing UMG for harassment and defamation.

The Start of the Legal Battle

Drake Dropped A Lawsuit Against UMG Then Pursues Another.

The legal battle between Drake and Universal Music Group can be traced to a lyric on Kendrick Lamar’s song “Not Like Us.”

He alleges that he and his entourage are being called “certified pedophiles, who should be registered and placed on neighborhood watch.”ac

According to The BBC, in papers filed in New York, Drake’s attorneys accused the record label of,

“launching a campaign to create a viral hit” out of the song that made the “false factual allegations that Drake is a criminal paedophile, and to suggest that the public should resort to vigilante justice in response.”

This comes after Drake withdrew a lawsuit against UMG just 24 hours ago. As we mentioned earlier, Drake was suing both Spotify and UMG. Here was the issue, according to Variety,

“he argued that Universal had licensed the song “at drastically reduced rates to Spotify” and used bots to generate extra plays, generating “the false impression that the song was more popular than it was in reality.”

Drake pursued action against the musical giants from that assumption but then dropped it. Now, we are watching Drake’s legal team allegedly go after UMG in a different lawsuit.

Universal Music Group issued a statement saying,

“The suggestion that [the company] would do anything to undermine any of its artists is offensive and untrue.”

It added that “no amount of contrived and absurd legal arguments… can mask the fact that fans choose the music they want to hear.”

Spotify also responded that there was “no economic incentive for users to stream Not Like Us over any of Drake’s tracks”.

Ultimately, Drake withdrew the lawsuit.

Drake’s Dispute With Universal Music Group

Drake’s dispute with Universal Music Group has garnered a response by UMG. UMG stated,

“Not only are these claims untrue, but the notion that we would seek to harm the reputation of any artist — let alone Drake — is illogical. We have invested massively in his music and our employees around the world have worked tirelessly for many years to help him achieve historic commercial and personal financial success.”

Oddly, Drake would file a lawsuit against his music label, UMG, mainly because UMG has distributed Drake’s music for years. The record label defends this litigation, saying it has always protected its artists.

Drake’s making these allegations against them is disheartening. These kinds of lawsuits can have ramifications for diss tracks in general.

It could interfere with free speech about artists’ creativity, and other artists could decide to pursue the same litigation.

As the legal battle between Drake and Universal Music Group unfolds, the music industry is watching closely to see how it will all play out.

With both parties digging in their heels, this dispute is far from over. Drake’s determination to seek justice and defend his rights as an artist is commendable.

While others may see this as the beginning of free speech for music artists.

And Drake’s fight against a significant music label like Universal Music Group could have lasting implications for the industry.

It remains to be seen how this legal saga will conclude and what it will mean for the future of Drake’s music career.
