Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo formed The Neptunes in the early 1990s. Both Chad and Pharrell have enjoyed great success as dynamic duos. However, there has been a breach between the two phenomenal producers.

As a result, Chad filed a lawsuit against his former music partner. Chad claims a few issues could be resolved if Pharrell is willing to do so. Chad’s attorney claims that Pharrell is trying to monopolize their name.

According to Attorney Kenneth D. Freundlichand, Pharell is attempting to register trademarks for ‘The Neptunes’ unilaterally. Billboard reports that Chad and Pharrell own the rights to ‘The Neptunes’ equally.

But when Pharrell allegedly excluded Chad from applications to register their name. In addition, there are three separate applications for ‘The Neptunes,’ trademark.

One if for their music being covered in streaming platforms, another for music videos. Then there is the issue with ‘The Neptunes’ content and live performances.

According to Vibe, Pharrell allegedly wants sole ownership and control of ‘The Neptunes,’ trademark.

In case you are not aware, ‘The Neptunes,’ produced a lot of music in the 2000s. Rapper Nelly’s hit song, ‘ Hot in Herre,’ and Snoop Dogg’s ‘Drop It Like It’s Hot,’ were produced by ‘The Neptunes.’

Dispute Over Neptune Trademark Ownership

The dispute over trademark ownership of ‘The Neptunes,’ has been brewing for some time. Chad reportedly feels marginalized in the partnership with Pharrell Williams.

The Neptunes brand has become synonymous with innovative and influential music production. Chad and Pharrell have clearly played pivotal roles in shaping its success.

The lawsuit aims to address discrepancies in trademark ownership and resolve any misunderstandings. In a statement, Pharrell said he was surprised by the allegations.

“We have reached out on multiple occasions to share in the ownership and administration of the trademark and will continue to make that offer. The goal here was to make sure a third party doesn’t get a hold of the trademark and to guarantee Chad and Pharrell share in ownership and administration.”

Attorney for Chad, Kenneth Freundlich, is allegedly disputing Pharrell’s claims he reached out. Here is what he shared,

“If Pharrell’s intent was to include Chad in the filing, he should have registered it in the name of them jointly or as a partnership and not in his own name,” he said. “This was a land grab in a long simmering dispute that has yet to be resolved.”

As you can see, this is a severe issue between Chad and Pharrell. If both parties don’t reach an amicable agreement, litigation can go on for many years.

It would be very sad if the two former friends and collaborators were not able to resolve the matter.
