Max Julien Role In “The Mac” Made Him Famous

Maxwell Banks, aka Max Julien, was born on January 1, 1933. And, it was on January 1, 2022, he passed away. Max started his career on Broadway. However, most people remember him for his breakout role in the movie “The Mac.” Although Blaxploitation movies depicted blacks as whores, pimps, and drug dealers, it was what we watched back then. We did not have many choices. So, many of us packed theaters to see movies such as Cleopatra Jones, Three The Hard Way, Which Way Is Up, Blacula, Sweet Sweetback’s Baadassss Song, Shaft, Tick Tick Tick, Superfly, Hammer, Across 110th Street, Black Mama: White Mama, Trouble Man, and of course, The Mac, as reported Wiki

Even though, these movies did not showcase the best side of African Americans they did contribute to our culture. Not to mention, these movies introduced a lot of famous actors like Richard Roundtree(Shaft), Pam Grier (Black Mama White Momma & Foxy Brown), Fred T Williams (Three The Hard Way), Jim Brown (Tick, Tick, Tick), Ron O’Neal (Superfly), Mario Van Peebles (Sweet Sweetback’s Baadassss Song), and Max Julien (The Mack).

Of course, we can now celebrate all sorts of Black lives in movies and TV. But we must not forget those actors who paved the way. And, Max Julien is among those great actors. Max acted in the movies (Def Jam’s How To Be A Player, The Black Klansman, Psych-Out, The Savage Seven, The Mod Squad, Up Tight, Cleopatra Jones, Thomasine & Bushrod, and The Bold Ones. In addition, Max was a sculptor and clothes designer. He lived a very fulfilling life.

Not to mention, Julien’s performance in the film is embedded in hip hop culture, and scores of rappers have sampled Goldie’s lines or scenes from the movie, including Snoop Dogg, Raekwon, Mobb Deep, LL Cool J, and Public Enemy, as reported by The New York Post.

We send out condolences to his family. Rest In Power!!!
