Charles Barkley Donates $1M To JSU. Barkley is giving partly because of Deion Sanders. Sanders is former coach of JSU.
Barkley Continues To Support Historically Black Universities
Charles Barkley Donates $1M To JSU. This donation will continue to elevate the University, as reported by Vibe.
In fact, those were the words of Yolanda Owens. Owens is the interim vice president for institutional advancement. She mentioned this,
“We are very thankful and look forward to working with Mr. Barkley to facilitate this generous gift,” She went on to say,“We appreciate his acknowledgement of Jackson State University and the great work that goes on at our institution. Because of his generosity, JSU will have an opportunity to support institutional priorities at a greater level and continue the efforts to elevate the university.”
Having said this, donating to HSBU’s is not new for Barkley. He is an advent supporter. In fact, he donating money to Alabama A&M University.
Some of his previous donations include,
Clark Atlanta University, Morehouse College, Miles College, Tuskegee University, and Spelman College.
Coach Deion Sanders and Barkley are long time friends. And, Barkley admitted,“
They’re probably gonna take a little hit with him leaving, so I want to show them some love because, man, what (Sanders) accomplished there was pretty extraordinary,”
Needless to say, Barkley has a point. Oftentimes, HBCU’s are not financially supported by government programs.
As a result funding is limited for students. Not to mention, the students who attend HBCU’s don’t always get the best opportunities.
It is very important that famous athlete’s who have gone to HBCU’s give back. Both legendary athlete’s understand the importance helping.
In my opinion, this kind of support helps the next generation. In terms of, providing an education that is rich in African American culture.
