Drake Ends Lawsuit Against UMG & Spotify

Drake Ends Lawsuit Against UMG & Spotify. Surprisingly, popular rapper Drake has decided not to pursue his legal action. Universal and Spotify were allegedly accused of boosting Kendrick Lamar’s numbers in his hit song “Not Like Us.” But he has met with Spotify and changed his stand. Fans and industry insiders alike have eagerly awaited the resolution of this case, as it has the potential to impact the music business landscape significantly.

Drake Settles Legal Dispute With Spotify & Univeral Music Group

Drake Ends Lawsuit Against UMG & Spotify.

The Canadian rapper made headline news in November 2024, claiming Kendrick Lamar’s song was pushed. In other words, Drake claimed the song “Not Like Us” had bots and payola to help sales, as Variety reported.

The allegations that set the legal action in motion led to a dispute. This lawsuit was said to be a “pre-action” move.

Although Kendrick Lamar’s song was being played everywhere, Drake was not buying it. Therefore, he entered legal action against Spotify and UMG.  At the time of the lawsuit, UMG shared this,

“The suggestion that UMG would do anything to undermine any of its artists is offensive and untrue,” read the statement. “We employ the highest ethical practices in our marketing and promotional campaigns. No amount of contrived and absurd legal arguments in this pre-action submission can mask the fact that fans choose the music they want to hear.”

Fans loved Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us.” As we mentioned earlier, it was widely popular. Billboard says it is up for five Grammys and has made the number on the spot.

Also, Kendrick’s song was considered a diss song against Drake. We all know that fans love Diss tracks, and this one was celebrated.

To make matters worse, the alleged diss track broke Spotify’s streaming record, being streamed more than 6.59 million times. Kendrick could not have known his song would have such great success.

No doubt, this may have caused Drake to pursue legal action. Nevertheless, Drake had a change of heart, which counts.

Perhaps Drake is willing to end his long-standing feud with Kendrick, but maybe not. After all, it’s big business to have diss tracks. More importantly, Kenrick’s song is one of the biggest hit diss songs ever.

Timeline Of Drake And Kendrick Lamar’s Beef

These two successful rappers have been beefing for a minute. Vulture reports that the powder keg that ended the feud between Drake and Kendrick could be “Like That.”

It was mentioned in “Like That” with Future and Metro Boomin that Kendrick did with them that started it all.

Or so it seems, especially since the reference to “The Big Three” seems to be the culprit for the feud. So, the “Big Three” referenced Kendrick, J. Cole, and Drake.

Then Drake answered the diss with  the release of “Push Up.” Here are some of the lyrics,

“You ain’t in no Big Three, SZA got you wiped down, Travis got you wiped down, Savage got you wiped down / Like your label, boy, you in a scope right now / And you gon’ feel the aftermath of what I write down / I’m at the top of the mountain, so you tight now / Just to have this talk with yo’ ass, I had to hike down / Big difference between Mike then and Mike now.” Drake also went after Lamar’s work on pop songs from the likes of Maroon 5 and Taylor Swift, as well as throwing a stray dig at Rick Ross with the lyric “I might take your latest girl and cuff her like I’m Ricky / Can’t believe he jumpin’ in, this nigga turnin’ 50 / Every song that made it on the chart, he got from Drizzy.”

This explains why the two are beefing. They have no issue with arguing. From that point on, the saga continued. Now, Drake has decided to drop his lawsuit against the music giants.

But this does not mean Drake will end this alleged feud with Kendrick. While there seems to be no end to this ongoing issue, it does not hurt to keep the fire going since these diss tracks help boost music sales.

It’s possible this was the idea: create diss tracks to boost music sales. Do you think the music industry orchestrates these diss feuds?
