Singer Brandy Sings The Theme Song From A Different World

Affectionately dubbed “The Vocal Bible” by critics and peers, Brandy Norwood revolutionized 1990s R&B with her signature complex vocal layering, smooth runs, and iconic hits like “I Wanna Be Down” and the Grammy-winning duet “The Boy Is Mine”. Across a multi-decade career, she expanded her artistic influence beyond music to become a cultural titan, starring in hit television series like Moesha and making history as the title lead in Disney’s groundbreaking 1997 film Cinderella. New Vocal Spin for Hillman College

Grammy-winning R&B icon Brandy Norwood has officially recorded a brand-new rendition. It’s the iconic theme song for Netflix’s upcoming sequel series to A Different World.

The original theme was co-written by original cast member Dawnn Lewis. Alongside Stu Gardner and Bill Cosby, the song was epic. It is also one of the most recognizable TV openings of all time. Over the course of the original show’s six-season run, legendary vocalists including Phoebe Snow, Aretha Franklin, and Boyz II Men put their unique stamps on the tune. Now, Brandy steps into that rich musical lineage to kick off a new era for the franchise.

Honoring a Television Legacy

For Brandy, taking on the project carries immense personal significance. Having grown up watching A Different World during its original run on NBC, the singer expressed her excitement and humility about stepping into the booth.

“Singing this iconic theme song for A Different World means everything to me,” Brandy shared in a statement. “It was one of those shows that I had to watch every time it came on… I just hope I can do it as much justice as Ms. Franklin.”

Brandy’s arrangement retains the original lyrics while introducing fresh musical elements, blending nostalgic familiarity with contemporary R&B vocals.

What to Expect from the Sequel Series

According to coverage from Essence and the Black Information Network, the 10-episode comedy series follows Deborah Wayne (played by Maleah Joi Moon), the youngest daughter of fan-favorite couple Whitley Gilbert and Dwayne Wayne.
