Clarissa Shields Suspended For Alleged Marijuana Use. In a surprising turn of events, Clarissa Shields, the reigning female boxing champion, has been suspended for alleged marijuana use. This news has sent shockwaves through the sports world as Shields is known for her clean image and dedication to her sport. Let’s take a closer look at the details surrounding this suspension.
Clarissa Shields Fails Drug Test
Clarissa Shields Suspended For Alleged Marijuana Use.
Boxing Champion Clarissa Shields recently underwent a routine drug test. This test is administered as part of the regulations set forth by the Boxing Commission.
In a report by ESPN, the 29-year-old boxing champ was given an “oral fluid sample” before her fight on Feb. 2, 2025. Unfortunately, the results allegedly came back positive for marijuana use.
This revelation has shocked many, as Clarissa has always prided herself on being a clean athlete. The news of her failed drug test has raised questions about her integrity and commitment to the sport.
According to the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), marijuana is banned from boxing. Therefore, Clarissa has been suspended. However, we are not sure if her suspension is indefinite.
Here is what the Michigan Commission said on Thursday,
“Ms. Shields’ conduct as a licensed professional boxer constitutes an immediate threat to the integrity of professional boxing, the public interest, and the welfare and safety of professional athletes,”
We know the World Boxing Organization (WBO) does not have the authority to suspend boxers. But they have requested she “show notice” of an explanation.
Therefore, the Michigan Commission is investigating whether disciplinary action should be taken.
Alleged Marijuana Use
The use of marijuana in professional sports is a controversial topic. Other professional sports are not as strict with regulations for the use of the drug.
Having said this, there is an ongoing argument on whether marijuana could be considered a performance-enhancing drug. For the most part, the use of marijuana has more of a calming effect.
In other words, marijuana may not be considered a “performance-enhancing drug.” In a study by the National Library of Medicine (NLM), there is some evidence that marijuana may be regarded as a “performance-enhancing drug.”
Another factor in the report suggested, “Cannabis has a potential impact on the health of athletes as well as on performance in both training and in competition.”
Some of the research is inconclusive because it depends on the continued use of the drug. In Clarissa’s case, we will say that the boxing regulatory system will determine her fate.
While some states have legalized marijuana for recreational use, it is still banned in most sports organizations, as we mentioned earlie , due to its potential effects on performance.
Clarissa has denied she has used marijuana, so we can only assume she did not. Until further investigation is completed, she will remain suspended from competition.
