The Artist Is Receiving Mixed Reviews On “The Embrace”
A New Statue of Dr. King & Coretta Is Unveiled. Now, there is some controversy swirling, as reported by TMZ.
Some people don’t know why Hank Thomas did not include their heads. Sculptor Thomas shows a 1964 embrace by the couple.
Thomas took a photo where Dr.King had wrapped his arm around his wife. This took place after Dr. King won the Nobel Peace Prize.
So, I can see why Thomas chose that spot. This statue stands 20-feet tall, 40 -foot wide, as reported by ABC7.
According to a blog post from Embrace Boston,
“We seek to dismantle structural racism through their work at the intersection of arts and culture, community and research and policy.”
Also, Embrace mentioned, the statue “symbolizes”the hug Dr. MLK Jr. shared with his wife, Coretta.”
After all, it is the place where they met as college students. Why not commemorate the moment with a statue.
During the unveiling some of the King family was present. Not to mention, there was a large crowd, as well.
At the time, reactions to the statue were not known. However, there was mixed reactions on Twitter.
While some were admiring Thomas work, other were not. I am not sure if Thomas expected rave reviews.
Especially since, he decide not to include Dr. Kings and Coretta’s heads. Needless to say, Thomas wanted to honor Dr. King.
Perhaps, he could have included their heads. Of course, the photo he used to sculpt the idea from was endearing.
Therefore, adding their heads would have been better. By the same token, there may have been less controversy.

Dr. Martin Luther King & Coretta Civil Rights Icons
As we commemorate Dr. Kings birthday, let’s look at his great contribution. He did so much for Civil Rights.
More importantly,
“Martin Luther King Jr. dedicated his life to the nonviolent struggle for civil rights in the United States. King’s leadership played a pivotal role in ending entrenched segregation for African Americans and to the creation of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, considered a crowning achievement of the civil rights era. King was assassinated in 1968, but his words and legacy continue to resonate for all those seeking justice in the United States and around the world. As King said at the Washington National Cathedral on March 31, 1968, “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”
Equally important,
Coretta continued Dr. King’s quest for peace and equality,
“Mrs. King tirelessly carried the message of nonviolence and the dream of the Beloved Community to almost every corner of our nation and globe. She led goodwill missions to many countries in Africa, Latin America, Europe and Asia. She lent her support to pro-democracy movements worldwide and communicated with many world leaders, including Corazon Aquino, president of the Philippines from 1986–1992; Kenneth Kaunda, first president of Zambia from 1924–2021; and Nelson Mandela.”
What a remarkable legacy left by both Dr. King and Coretta.
