Congratulations are in order for Nelly and Kelly Rowland. The hit song “Dilemma” which debuted in 2002 is a hit, once again. This time it has gained one billion views on YouTube. Yes, you heard me correctly, one billion views. This was quite a surprise for Nelly. Surely, Nelly or Kelly did not expect to hear that their duet was viewed by so many people. Especially, from a younger audience.
Good music wins YouTubers over
We have often heard that music is universal. Well, this duet with Nelly and Kelly does prove that theory is true. No doubt the people listening to “Dilemma” were not born or very young when this song came out. Even so, young people recognize a hit song when they hear it. Given that, both Nelly and Kelly have enjoyed great success in the music industry. Kelly became a household name as one of the members female group “Destiny’s Child.” Which featured the voices of Beyonce Knowles Carter and Michelle Williams.
Let’s not forget, Nelly was a midwest sensation. Cornell “Nelly” Haynes Jr. had one of 2002’s favorite dance songs “Hot in Herre.” Not to mention, the great success of “Dilemma”. Both songs were from his second album”Nellyville”. And, Destiny’s Child changed the landscape of girl groups. To date, Destiny’s Child is the biggest girl group in the universe. When Destiny’s Child first started they had minimal success. However, two of the original members (LeToya Luckett and LaTavia Roberson) were let go. When Destiny’s Child regrouped they had major success with hit songs, “No, No, No”, “Bills, Bills, Bills”, and “Say My Name.” You all know the rest.
In the history of duets, I can name a few hip hop collaborations that had good success
- Mary J Blige & Method Man, “All I Need”
- Jay Z & Beyonce, “Crazy in Love”
- Whitney Houston & Bobby Brown, “We Got Something In Common”
- JaRule & Ashanti, “Mesmerize”
- 50 Cent & Olivia, “Candy Shop”
Needless to say, “Dilemma” has surpassed them all on YouTube. This particular song was first introduced by Ms. Patti Labelle. Her song”Love, Need and Want You”, was released in 1984. I can see why Patti was part of the project. After all, Patti first made the song famous. The song was written and produced by Bunny Sigler and Kenny Gamble. I am sure you have heard the name Kenny Gamble before. He is part of the legendary team Gamble & Huff. This well-known team developed the Philly sound in the ’70s. Some of the greatest R&B voices came out of the record label “Philadelphia International.”
Mostly, all of the seventies groups recorded songs with this dynamic duo (The O’Jays, Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes, Billy Paul, TSOP, and McFadden & Whitehead). Throughout the years, we have all enjoyed duets. In general, remakes of certain songs have greater success than the original. In this case, “Dilemma” was magic.
