Is it Lil Kim, Queen Latifah, Mc Lyte, Missy Elliott, or Remy Ma your top five female rappers? Or do you have a different list than I do?

Who is the Queen of the Queendom?

Denise “Lil Kim” Jones was discovered by the late Notorious B.I.G. She was of the rap group Junior M.A.F.I.A. Lil Kim was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. When Lil Kim came on the rap scene there were only a few female rappers. Her freestyle rap method was controversial. She was sexy, bold, and confident. Not that other female rappers were not. But Lil Kim was a pioneer.

Lil Kim’s debut album “Hard Core” (1996) was certified double platinum. And, the album sold more than six million copies worldwide. In addition, Lil Kim had the success of “Notorious K.I.M. (2000) & ” La Bell Mafia’ (2003), which both went certified platinum, as well. Of course, Lil Kim has been successful as an actress, songwriter, model, and reality TV personality, as reported by Biography.

Dana” Queen Latifah” Owens is a renaissance woman. And, a force to be reckoned with. Queen Latifah has so many accomplishments to her credit. When Queen Latifah started her career in rap she signed with Tommy Boy Records (1989). She had great success with her single “Ladies First.”  This upbeat tune did very well. But it was ‘U.N.I.T.Y that became the Sistahs’ national anthem.

And, Queen Latifah won a Grammy Award for it. Additionally, Queen Latifah songs made the Billboard 100 7 times. This New Jersey-born rapper, singer, actress, producer, and songwriter is the epitome of Black Girl Magic. Also, Queen exemplifies black pride and sisterhood like no other. Some of her greatest work to date includes starring in television (Living Single, The Queen Latifah Show, & The Equalizer). Just a few days ago, Queen Latifah was given “The Life Time Achievement Award” at the  BET award show, as reported by XXL Mag.

Lana “MC Lyte” Moorer is a rapper, TV announcer, Grammy-nominated, actress, writer, producer, and “Lifetime Achievement recipient” from The BET Hip Hop Awards. In addition, MC Lyte is considered one of hip hop’s female pioneers. She gained fame in the 1980s. MC Lyte was the first solo female rapper to release an album entitled “Lyte as a Rock.”

Missy “Misdemeanor Elliott.” She is a singer, songwriter, producer & actress. She has worked with hip-hop producer Timbaland. Together, they have made great hits such as, (Supa Dupa Fly, & Sock It 2 Me) along with other great hits. Also, Missy won numerous music awards, 4 Grammy’s, MTV video, American music, and 6 BET awards, to date. Her videos were revolutionary. Not to mention, futuristic. Missy will forever be in the top 5 greatest MC’s of all time, in my opinion.

Reminisce “Remy Ma” Mackie is one of my favorite MCs, hands down. She is a rapper, songwriter, & actress. Her raw style of rap is what put her on the map. Remy was discovered by rap legend Fat Joe. There are not many female rappers who can spit off the cuff. In other words, Remy needs no ghostwriter. All you have to do is give her the mic. Once it’s in her hands, it’s over. Early, in her career, Remy was part of the rap group “Terror Squad”. In case you don’t remember, the late Big Pun was part of Terror Squad, as well.

She is one of only 6 female rappers to top Billboard 100. The hit song “Lean Back”, garnered her the “Best Female Hip-Hop Artist at the BET Awards(2005,2017). Remy is also the recipient of two Vibe awards, two Source awards, and has been nominated for 3 Grammys. Equally important, Remy is the star of “Love & Hip Hop: New York.” Let me say this, Remy is still evolving as an entertainer. So, there you have it. All five of these MCs are phenomenal women. I can’t wait for the next chapters in their careers to unfold. How about you?
