Singer Jody Watley Gets Prestigious Award. Not only is Watley a singer, she writes, produces, and is a motivational speaker. Many may remember Watley as a “Soul Train” dancer.
Also, you may remember her as the third person in “Shalamar.” Shalamar was one of the most celebrated groups in the 70s. Or at least, that is my opinion.
I will never forget watching all of her dance moves on Soul Train. Soul Train was a legendary dance show. It aired in 1971. Anyone who loves dance and R&B knows about Soul Train.
Well, Jody, Howard Hewitt, and Jeffrey Daniels were members of the Shalamar. More importantly, it was Daniels and Watley who were dancing partners on the show.
The famous Don Cornelius was the show’s host. In fact, Soul Train went off the air in 2006. Of course, Watley went on to have great success. At first, Watley was with Shalamar.
But when the group disbanded she embarked on a solo career. Important to note, that Watley was one of the first female R&B singers to merge hip-hop.
In other words, Watley collaborated with the legendary hip-hop duo Eric B. & Rakim, as reported by BET. Another thing, Watley was one of the first to showcase high fashion outfits while singing.
Most think it was Madonna who started wearing the tutu frilly skirts. Not so, it was Watley. She paved the way and set trends. Her sultry soul voice is legendary.

In addition, the city of Atlanta will honor Watley on June 2, 2022. Not only is she being recognized nationally. Jody Watley has received an honorary Doctorate Degree in Business.
