Dez Parkes Dead After Decades Of Contributions To Music
DJ Dez Parkes has died.
The producer/compiler/record collector was known as the walking encyclopedia of music.
The label owner was arguably London’s most educated source of music information.
A cause of death has not yet been announced.
Friend and Director of The Soul Survives Magazine, Fitzroy Anthoney Facey confirms Parkes’ death on Facebook posting –
“It’s with our deepest sorrow that we inform you of the death of our beloved friend, the legendary Dez Parkes, our brother in music who sadly passed away today.”
“The family are still processing this massive loss so please respect their privacy at this sad time”.
Among his many contributions to music, Parkes teamed up with Trevor Shakes.
Together, they launched Spats, the UK’s first club dedicated to underground boogie music.
That was in the ’70s.
By 1987, he was approached by RCA Records and started working on a compilation of music, beginning the rare groove revival.
Additionally, he went on to do other compilations, notably the Motown Rare Grooves, The Best Of Pleasure, and Mastercuts.
In all, he’s been on the music scene for nearly four decades.
Tributes are pouring in since the news of his death was announced.
Fellow DJ Lorraine King wrote –
“Dez Parkes was one of the most respected soul DJs in the country & one the UK’s most knowledgeable sources of music information. He was also one of the driving forces behind the RARE LP series which introduced many to the rare groove genre. RIP Sir & thank you for the music.”
Condolences go out to his family, friends, and all who knew him.
RIP
