Chris Brown’s $500 Million Defamation Lawsuit Dismissed

Chris Brown’s $500 Million Defamation Lawsuit Dismissed.  A judge has officially dismissed the $500 million defamation lawsuit filed by R&B singer Chris Brown against Warner Bros. Discovery and Ample Entertainment. The lawsuit stemmed from the 2024 documentary Chris Brown: A History of Violence, which the singer claimed was “full of lies and deception.”

Background Of The Lawsuit

Brown filed the massive lawsuit in January 2025, alleging that the production team promoted false information to gain “likes, clicks, downloads, and dollars.” His legal team particularly targeted the film’s focus on an allegation that he raped a woman on a yacht owned by Sean “Diddy” Combs in 2020—an accusation Brown has consistently and strongly denied.

The Judge’s Ruling

On Monday, January 12, 2026, Judge Colin Leis issued a court order dismissing the case. In his ruling, the judge stated:

  • Journalistic Standards: The documentary met necessary standards by presenting a balanced view of the allegations.

  • Fair Reporting: The court noted that the film included the inconsistencies in the accuser’s story that Brown’s team cited, including previously uncovered text messages.

  • Anti-SLAPP Statute: The lawsuit was dismissed under California’s anti-SLAPP law, which protects free speech from meritless litigation.

The judge found that Brown failed to establish even “minimal merit” to proceed. Chris claimed the documentary was full of “lies and deception, ” but his lawsuit was dismissed.

Notable Commentary

The judge also dismissed claims regarding an interview with writer Scaachi Koul, who commented on Brown’s “predisposition” for violence. The ruling pointed out that because Brown previously admitted to the 2009 assault of Rihanna, the plaintiff provided no evidence that such opinions were factually false.

Neither Chris Brown nor his legal representatives have publicly commented on whether they plan to appeal the decision.
