Brandon Hammond From Soul Food Speaks. Hammond became famous as a child actor. Who will forget his role as “Ahmad.”. In fact, Hammond’s first big role was in “Menace II Society.”
He played young Caine. After that role, we saw him in many others. But his role in Soul Food was phenomenal. That TV show was my favorite back then. I remember it came on at ten at night.
Many households in our community tuned in faithfully every week. There were not many Black TV shows. And, this show was filled with talented actors. Of course, the show followed the very successful movie.
Big Hollywood names such as Vanessa Williams, Vivica A. Fox, Nia Long, Michale Beach, Irma Hall, and Mekhi Phifer made up the Joseph family.
Famous producer Kenneth “Babyface” Edwards and his former wife Tracey produced the film. Soul Food became a cult classic movie. After the success of the movie, the TV show was born.
When the show hit the air in 1997 some of the actors were re-casted. The Joseph women consisted of Vanessa Williams(Maxine), Malinda Williams, (Bird), and Nicole Ari Parker as Teri.
Also, the men, (Rockmond Dunbar (Kenny), Darrin Henson (Lem), and Boris Kodjoe (Damon Carter) partnered up with the Joseph women. Of course, Brandon was replaced by young actor Aaron Meeks.
Having said this, Hammond would go on to star in roles such as Strange Days, Waiting to Exhale, The Fan, Mars Attack, and Space Jam, as reported by Black Doctor.
Unfortunately, it seemed Hammond disappeared from acting. It was when Hammond sat down with hosts O’God and SamAnt that we got the scoop.
Nowadays, Hammond is working behind the scenes as a writer and director.
