Breonna’s Family Wins $12M Settlement. This i the largest pay out for an African American woman. This is the largest pay out for Louisville police.
Will Breonna finally get justice?
Breonna’s family wins $12M settlement. We can finally the city of Louisville has been held accountable for the death of Breonna Taylor. Mayor Greg Fischer held a press conference with the announcement of the settlement, as reported by CNN. In attendance was Breonna’s mother Tamika Palmer and attorneys Benjamin Crump.
The mayor’s office confirmed the settlement was the largest ever paid. In fact, Breonna is the first African American woman to receive such a large amount. However, there was the settlement does not admit any wrong doing.
With that said, Ms. Palmer (Breonna’s mother) continue to push for charges. The officers involved in the fatal shooting of Breonna have not been charged. And, for me this is very disturbing. Especially, since Breonna was killed while sleeping. Also, the police barged into Breonna’s apartment without any warning.
During the press conference yesterday attorney Lonita Baker and Ms. Palmer had wanted everyone to know “it’s time to move forward with criminal charges.” It is important to note, that Ms. Palmer said:
“”Justice for Breonna means that we will continue to save lives in her honor,” said Tamika Palmer, Taylor’s mother. “No amount of money accomplishes that, but the police reform measures that we were able to get passed as a part of this settlement mean so much more to my family, our community, and to Breonna’s legacy.”
The police reform measure which Ms. Palmer mentioned is a good start. Of course, amount of money can bring Breonna back. But being able to bridge the divide with police reform and community is vital. I am sure some are wondering if this can be consider justice for Breonna.
