A White Delta: Privileged or Persecuted?

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. (DST) is a private, not-for-profit organization. Their purpose is to provide assistance and support to African American women and the various communities they serve. This is a historically African American sorority. The multi-national organization was founded during a time in American history when it was illegal for blacks and whites to integrate.

What is a Delta (of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc.)

The organization was founded by college-educated women dedicated to public service. The first white member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. was a freedom rider. She was hunted by the KKK for working to desegregate the south. Her name was Joan Trumpauer Mulholland.

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc.

Mulholland was born in 1941 and raised in Arlington, Virginia. Her great-grandparents were slave owners in Georgia. After the United States Civil War, they became sharecroppers. Her’s was a home of staunch segregationists.

Her empathic sensitivities to the Black American community seem a far cry from the white American Delta who sparked a viral disagreement on Tik Tok. @Meganishh was the Tik Tok handle of the Delta in question. The blonde graduate of a Historically Black University (HBCU) smugly rubbed her Black  Greek membership in the face of a young black woman who does not belong to the “divine 9” Panhellenic organization of Black greek-letter fraternities and sororities.

Her response to the young African woman was teeming with a superiority complex some say black greeks have in general when it comes to black non-greeks. However common, her response adding to her being a white woman, inspired a month’s with of responses on Tik Tok. Some of the responses she received were from fellow irritate deltas aghast at her remarks. This carried on until she finally deleted her Tik Tok account. Here is the exchange that sparked outrage:
