50 Cent is being sued. Remy Martin, the French distiller, has sued the rapper for his bottle design of 50’s Branson cognac.
Does Remy Martin Have A Case Against 50 Cent?
Curtis “50Cent” Jackson is headed to a New York courtroom. Filed on Friday, a lawsuit alleges that 50’s Branson cognac brand infringes on Remy’s trademark and patented bottle design.
As reported by Reuters, the complaint made against Branson calls their design a “blatant attempt” on Remy’s branding.
Additionally, the lawsuit filed in a Manhattan federal courthouse describes the bottle as having a “circular array of raised flat and angled quadrilateral facets…” The complaint also alleges that Branson’s branding of their bottle is a “near-exact reproduction” and “nearly indistinguishable”.
Remy Martin has been around for 35 years. 50 Cent partnered with Sire Spirits in 2018 and Branson was launched. Purchasing a bottle of Branson was only made available in 2020.
So what does 50 Cent have to say about all this? Taking to Instagram, 50 Cent posted this –
“They are afraid of me already, Branson Cognac is the new wave. REMY is #2 Behind Henny and worried about Branson Smh. I’m just getting started.”
Does this lawsuit have any merit? Remy’s cognac bottle has a “jewel-shaped glass cognac bottle design.” Arguably, so does 50’s Branson bottle. But are they too similar?
